The condensate pump is one of the most important parts of an HVAC system. This means that it needs to be in good condition at all times in order to run properly. You cannot let issues that crop up continue to get worse or else your entire system could stop working. An HVAC system produces condensation when it runs. The pump is used to remove the condensation from the home or return it to the system for recycling.

Before you go to clean your steam condensate return pump be sure to check for leaks. If you find any puddles near the pump or wetness, you need to find the source of the leak before cleaning the pump. Once you find the leak you need to make the necessary repairs. Be sure the power to the pump is turned off prior to repairing or cleaning it.

When the time comes to clean the pump you must first remove the PVC pipe that is attached. This pipe is connected to the reservoir. Do not operate the home’s HVAC system when cleaning or repairing the pump. You will want to clean the reservoir with water in order to rinse away any mold, mildew, algae, debris or other dirt that has accumulated.

A bottlebrush is an excellent tool to use for cleaning the steam condensate return pump. Use it to clean the openings where the drain lines connect to the pump. You should also check the pump for blocks that might have developed since the last time you cleaned it. Remove all blockages with water but make sure not to get the motor wet.

Compressed air is the safest way to remove debris, dirt, or dust from the pump’s motor. Consider putting algae tabs in the reservoir before activating the pump. This will help to prevent the buildup of algae.
